Exploring the tropical forest of Arenal at night is one of the most fascinating experiences Costa Rica has to offer. When the sun sets, the jungle enters a completely different phase: sounds intensify, eyes gleam among the vegetation, and biodiversity comes alive.
It is estimated that more than 40% of the fauna in tropical forests is nocturnal. In other words, when night falls, the rainforest transforms into a totally different ecosystem, full of activity and surprises.
Night walks in Arenal allow you to observe species that are rarely seen during the day. From small, vibrantly colored amphibians to stealthy predators moving among the branches, every step on the trail is an opportunity to discover something unique.
Below, we present some of the most interesting animals you can encounter during a night walk in the Arenal region.
1. Brightly Colored Frogs
Frogs are, without a doubt, the stars of the forest at night. They come out to hunt insects and to breed near bodies of water, especially during the rainy season, when their activity increases considerably.
One of the most iconic is the red-eyed tree frog, famous for its intense scarlet eyes and green body with blue and orange markings. During the day, it remains hidden under leaves, but when night falls it becomes active and can be observed near streams or ponds.
It is also common to find tree frogs of various sizes, some as small as a coin and others much larger, each with surprising patterns and colors.
2. Sloths Among the Branches
Although sloths are known for their slowness and mostly diurnal habits (in the case of the three-toed sloth), they can often be observed during night walks.
The two-toed sloth, for example, tends to be more active at night. With the help of flashlights, guides can detect its silhouette among the foliage, whether resting or slowly moving in search of food.
Seeing a sloth in its natural environment, surrounded by the tranquility of the nighttime forest, is an experience many visitors never forget.
3. Tropical Forest Snakes
Snakes inspire both admiration and respect, and they are one of the most thrilling encounters on a night walk. Many species take advantage of the darkness to hunt frogs, lizards, or small rodents.
One of the most striking is the eyelash viper, recognized by the small scales above its eyes that resemble "eyelashes." It can be found in different colors, making it even more fascinating.
It is also possible to see non-venomous species moving between branches or resting near damp trails. Safe distances are always maintained, and observation is conducted under the guidance of experts.
4. Surprising Insects
The world of nocturnal insects in Arenal is incredibly diverse. During the walk, it is common to observe beetles, praying mantises, stick insects, and a wide variety of moths.
One of the favorites is the leaf insect, whose camouflage is so perfect that it looks like a real leaf. It often goes unnoticed even when it is right in front of us.
Flashlights also reveal spiders of various sizes, many of them harmless but equally fascinating.
5. Owls and Nocturnal Birds
Although they are harder to detect, nocturnal birds are also part of the spectacle. Owls, for example, use their acute sense of hearing to locate prey in the darkness.
In some cases, guides manage to identify their calls and help locate them among the branches. Seeing an owl in silence, watching from above, is a truly unique experience.
It is also possible to find other birds sleeping among the leaves, completely motionless.
6. Small and Curious Mammals
At night, the forest also reveals small mammals that are rarely seen during the day. Among them, you may encounter opossums, armadillos, kinkajous, and raccoons searching for food.
They are quick and elusive, but with a bit of luck they can be observed for a few seconds as they move through the forest.
7. Sleeping Lizards
A curious detail that surprises many visitors is finding lizards asleep on leaves or branches.
During the night, some species rest in positions that make them easy to locate with a flashlight. By shining softly, it is possible to see them completely motionless, waiting for dawn.
A Unique Experience in the Tropical Forest
Every night walk in Arenal is different. The number of animals you can observe depends on the weather, the season, and, of course, a bit of luck.
However, even when wildlife is elusive, the experience of walking under the night sky, surrounded by natural sounds and discovering small details illuminated by the flashlight, is something truly special.
To make the most of this activity, it is recommended to do it with experienced naturalist guides, who know the trails, the habits of the wildlife, and how to detect animals without disturbing them.
It is also important to wear appropriate footwear, bring insect repellent, a camera, and above all, a desire to live one of the most authentic experiences of the rainforest.
Arenal is, without a doubt, one of the best places in Costa Rica to discover the magic of the jungle at night. And on every walk, the forest always holds a new surprise among the shadows.
